About the dealer

Thomas Eller

Some have called Thomas Eller the “Swiss Army knife” of the art world. There isn´t much he has missed in his career of 30+ years in the art world. Early success as an artist put his works into important museum and private collections, like Aby Rosen (NY), Greenberger (NY) or Neues Museum Nuremberg, Kunsthalle Bremen, Berlinische Galerie,  ESMoA (Los Angeles), Dao Jiao Museum (Guangdong) and Ping Shan Museum.
After ten years living in New York as an artist, he was recruited by Hans Neuendorf, founder of artnet to establish the German offices of artnet and a German language magazine. After instituting a pioneering collaboration between Art Basel and artnet, as well as successful foray into the Chinese art market in 2006, he was asked to join Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin as director. The Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin was show-casing Berlin-based artists on Schloßplatz at the heart of Berlin and the current site of Humboldt Forum from 2008 to 2010.
After curating “Die 8 der Wege”, an exhibition of 25 younger Beijing-based artists in Berlin, Thomas Eller moved to Bejing and became the founder of Gallery Weekend Beijing and president of Ran Dian, an English-Chinese language art magazine.
Recently he has been one of four curators for the 7th Guangzhou Triennial, before deciding to take his knowledge and expertise to create his own gallery.

Returning to Germany after six years in Beijing, Thomas Eller opened THEgallery in 2021 in his ancestral family home – an old water mill on a river flowing towards the Main/Rhine.

documenta, Venice Biennale, Grand Palais Paris, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Guangzhou Triennial, Sharjah Biennal – those are some of the venues the artists of THEgallery have recently been exhibited at.

The Ukrainian sculptor Vadim Sidur (1924 – 1985) was a non-conformist artist and dubbed the Henry Moore of the Soviet Union. At THEgallery he meets Werner Knaupp, a death-defying octogenarian painter and participant in documenta 7, who currently is painting the most energetic works of his life.

THEgallery looks deep into history and far into geography. Artist from China and Central Asia, Meng Huang, Cao Yu, Almagul Menlibaeva, Saodat Ismailova, Gulnur Mukhazhanova are contextualized with German Postwar artists like K.O. Goetz, Bernard Schultze, Gerhard Hoehme, KRH Sonderborg and South American artist Michelle Marie Letelier.

Parallel to the Bamberg Art and Antiques Weeks, a dual exhibition takes place in Mürsbach, just outside the gates of Bamberg, spanning from post-war art to the present. This year would have been the 100th birthday of K.R.H. Sonderborg. The exhibition takes a look into the political motivations of a German Informel artist in politically turbulent times. In parallel, Michelle-Marie Letelier, who became known through the project "Younger Than Jesus" 2009 by Massimiliano Gioni at the New Museum, NY, presents two long-term projects her artistic research - the international salmon industry and the Chilean saltpetre trade.
