Oak, rosewood, dyed maple, kingwood, ebony, boxwood, bronzes, Paris around 1775, attributed to Pierre Macret.
This French chest of two drawers is veneered in rosewood on all sides and inlaid with elaborate cube marquetry in dyed maple and kingwood.
The three sides are framed with ebony bands and boxwood. The gilt bronzes and the marble top are original. The high-quality, well-crafted furniture is attributed to the workshop of Pierre Macret.
Macret was born in 1727 and became a master in Paris in 1756. He made very high-quality furniture in the Louis XV style in his workshop in the Rue Saint Nicolas. In 1785, he gave up the workshop.
The elegant chest of drawers presented here is an example of the transition from Louis XV to Louis XVI style, Macret's later creative period.
